MISS x Take MAR Summer Camp

We are excited to share a new partnership with you!

Meet MISS: Minorities in Shark Science

A non-profit organization in Bradenton, FL, and a 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner!

MISS provides a community, and funded opportunities for gender minorities of color who wish to enter the field of shark sciences. They aim to show that there are many gender minorities of color succeeding and interested in the field of science. Their programs include research opportunities, workshops, professional development, and educational opportunities in STEM (the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

Every year, they host their MISS SUMMER CAMP in St. Petersburg, FL, and this year (June 5-10) Take MAR is partnering with them to encourage and support diversity in marine sciences, create regenerative opportunities in nature, and promote the intricate connection of a healthy natural world, and personal well-being with the students.

The summer camp is a FREE one week long (overnights included!) marine science program intended to provide accessible science experiences for teens 13-17 from historically excluded groups in STEM including: gender minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals from low income communities. Some of the activities facilitated during summer camp include: fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, field surveys, shark dissections, coding, data collection and analysis, science communication, and best of all, interacting and sharing with other students that are passionate about STEM.

Stay tuned for more information, images, and a recap of this year's Summer Camp!

We strive to be seen and take up space in a discipline which has been largely inaccessible for scientists like us. We strive to be positive role models for the next generation. We seek to promote diversity and inclusion in shark science and encourage gender minorities of color to push through barriers and contribute knowledge in marine science.

Finally, we hope to topple the system that has historically excluded genders like us and create an equitable path to shark science. We believe diversity in scientists creates diversity in thought, which leads to innovation.” - MISS
